Indoor vs. Outdoor Family Photos: Which Is Right for You?

Family photos are some of my favourite sessions to photograph, right alongside weddings, engagements, and elopements. Once summer rolls around, my calendar starts filling with families, and it stays that way through fall and the holiday season. I love seeing familiar faces return year after year, while getting to meet new families along the way.

Booking the session is usually the easy part. Deciding where it should happen is where everyone suddenly has an opinion. Do you picture your family wrapped up on the couch, or chasing the last bit of sunshine together? Indoor vs Outdoor Family Photos: What’s the Difference?

If there’s one thing I’ve learned after photographing so many families, it’s this. The location changes way more than the background. It changes the whole vibe of your session.

So, what’s the real difference? It all comes down to the kind of experience you want to create. Both settings are beautiful, but they bring out different sides of your family. If you’re planning a family photoshoot soon, here are a few things worth thinking about before choosing your location:

• Your family’s personality. Are you happiest staying cozy at home, or does everyone come alive outside?
• The age of your kids. Some little ones love open spaces to run, while others feel more comfortable in familiar surroundings.
• The season. Summer, fall, winter, and spring each bring a completely different look and feel.
• The story you want to remember. Think about how you want this chapter of your family’s life to feel years from now.
• The overall experience. Your session should feel fun and natural, not like another item on your to do list.

A location doesn’t have to be fancy to photograph beautifully. Some of my favourite family galleries have happened in a simple living room, a quiet Airbnb, or the backyard where the kids play every day.

When Home Feels Like the Perfect Backdrop

One of the biggest surprises for families is hearing me say, “Your home is perfect.” You don’t need a designer house or a magazine worthy living room to create beautiful family photos. I’m looking for the little pockets of light, cozy corners, and spaces where your family naturally spends time together.

Some of my favourite images have been captured on a well loved couch, in a nursery filled with tiny details, around the kitchen island, or right in the backyard where the kids play every afternoon. Those places already hold so many memories, which is exactly what makes them so meaningful.

Home sessions also have a way of helping everyone settle in. The kids know where their favourite toys are, the family dog can wander in whenever they please, and there’s no pressure to rush from one spot to another. Everything feels familiar, and that comfort always finds its way into the photos.

The best part is that your home tells a story no other location ever could. Years from now, you’ll remember more than the smiles. You’ll remember the little house where this chapter of your family’s life unfolded.

When the Outdoors Tell the Story Best

For many families, a photoshoot is more than checking off this year’s family photos. It’s one of the rare occasions when everyone slows down, gets together, and spends quality time with one another. That becomes even more special when grandparents, grown siblings, or the whole extended family are part of the day.

With all that excitement, outdoor sessions often feel like the natural choice. There’s room for everyone to spread out, catch up, watch the kids play, and enjoy the moment without feeling confined to one space. It feels less like a formal photoshoot and more like a day spent together.

As we wander through a park, stroll along the beach, or explore a favourite trail, the best moments happen on their own. Someone reaches for Grandma’s hand, the cousins race ahead together, or everyone bursts into laughter over something completely unexpected. Those are the moments I love capturing because you simply can’t plan them.

Some families simply come alive outdoors. As a photographer, those sessions often feel less like work and more like following along while your family enjoys time together.

When it comes to choosing a location for your family photos, trust the place that feels the most natural to your family. Those are the sessions that always feel the most meaningful.

From what I’ve seen, the strongest photos are the ones where your family is simply spending time together in a way that feels normal to you. That bond shows up in the little things, and those are the moments that end up being worth keeping.
