Shooting outdoor weddings for over 5+ years has taught me one thing: your equipment can make or break the day. From unpredictable weather to tricky lighting, I’ve learned which gear keeps me sharp, prepared, and ready to capture every real, raw moment.

When shooting wedding ceremonies, I always bring at least two camera bodies and two lenses. If your primary camera fails, your backup is ready without missing a beat. Handling two cameras at once might sound tricky, but it comes down to the right setup. You can use a shoulder harness with clips or a belt system with attachments. I use spider holster clips for quick access and complete control. Since switching from a harness to the belt and Spider system, I have more freedom with angles, less strain on my neck, and I can move around the ceremony smoothly because the cameras stay secure with minimal slack.
When I have 2 bodies for ceremonies, typically I have either 2 prime lenses or 1 prime and 1 zoom lens, but always always have my 35mm 1.8 prime lens for ceremonies to really capture the full scenes when needed. The second lens varies from 24-70mm, 85mm 1.4 or 50mm 1.8, these lenses allow for variety within shooting an outdoor ceremony. (OVERLOOKED QUICK TIP for wedding photographers: Make sure your time and date on both bodies are synced to the exact same time right at the start of the day so both of your photos on each SD card flow seamlessly for you in the later process of editing.)
Do you really need a tripod for an outdoor wedding ceremony? Likely no. I have shot countless ceremonies without ever using a tripod. You’ll usually see videographers with tripods, but as a wedding photographer, you are constantly moving and working with two camera bodies in hand. Your gear needs to support mobility, flexibility, and speed, not hold still.
A flash for outdoor wedding ceremonies is usually not necessary when the ceremony takes place during daylight hours. In the summer months, natural sunlight is more than enough to light the scene. If your outdoor ceremony happens after dark, then I’d reconsider a tripod and a flash or two, but for most daytime ceremonies, this is rarely needed.
Outdoor Ceremony Wedding Photographer Equipment/Gear Checklist:

One essential piece of wedding photographer equipment for outdoor ceremonies I always bring is a portable charger and battery charger. This allows me to keep empty batteries full at all times even if I don’t end up needing them and always have spare batteries and gear just in case something were to happen. After all, this is a day that will only happen once and re live their favourite memories through your photos!
Whether this is your first wedding or first 100, I hope you got some insight on equipment to use when photographing an outdoor wedding ceremony. If your looking to elevate your wedding photography experience, consider adding a wedding welcome guide for your clients. I offer a fully assembled template you can use, just add some photos and your name! Chow for now!
