Travelling with children was new to us, and also this was the children’s first vacation trip. We did a little research and navigated taking a 6yrs old and 9yr old across Canada for a 4-day road trip in the van.

1. Avoid excessive drinks

Children have to use the bathroom more often, espesially when given too many liquid drinks. Frequently stopping over the course of a 32 hour road trip would make it a 50 hour road trip with all the stops so we chose wisely what to give them for drinks.

2. Lots of snacks

Have lots of snack options and have them easily accessbile to the kids so they can snack away in between meals. Easy pacakged shelf snacks work best, like pringles, and lunch snacks

3. Stop every 2-3 hours

This was a ggood sweet spot for everyone to use the bathroom, stretch their legs or a quick stop at a park to burn some energy.

4. Pre-downloaded movies

Have a tablet or device they can watch some movies or series on. This helps by pass some time on the road.

5. Stop at the Province signs

This is super exciting for them to spot it and get out for a photo, stretch and something to look forward to.

6. Play some games

I justed used chatgpt to help me come up with some games we could play in the car for their age we would all enjoy. The favourite was the story game; where one person starts the part of the story and someone adds onto, this made for a lot of laughs and jilled some time. Also ispy is a great one, especailly if you have a lot of baggage kicking around.

7. Morning routines

Start the day fresh, clean clothes, bathroom duties and pre oragnized van to allow for a smooth drive ahead. Everyone knows where everything is, are clean, and then you don’t have to stop for a little while.

8. Pillows

Whether its a neck pillow or bed pillow this helps them get comfortable if they wanna head down for a nap at any point.

9. Just have fun and make every moment a fun experience!

The kids we had are really good kids and listened to us really well which helped a lot and we didn’t have any problems having nothing short of an amazing and memorable time with them (my boyfriends little siblings).
