Pro Tips from an Experienced Wedding Photographer
Missed moments during a wedding day can ruin your reputation as a photographer faster than you’d think. Weddings are filled with once-in-a-lifetime moments that you simply can’t afford to miss. In wedding ceremony photography, knowing exactly where to be and when is crucial to ensuring you capture all of these unforgettable moments. But don’t worry! In this guide, I’ll break down exactly where you should be and when during the ceremony to ensure you’re in the right spot at the right time — especially if you’re shooting solo! Whether it’s your first ceremony or your hundredth, you’ll feel confident capturing all the important shots, including those candid moments with the guests.
Before the ceremony officially starts, your job is to capture the candid moments that set the tone for the day. This is an important part of wedding ceremony photography that often gets overlooked, but it’s where you can create a story from the very beginning. Here’s what you should do:
Coordinate with the Team: Be sure to touch base with the DJ, wedding planner, or coordinator about the ceremony timing. This helps you stay on schedule and ensures you’re in the right place at the right time.
Photograph Guests Arriving: As guests are arriving and finding their seats, look for the little moments: the smiles, the laughter, the interactions. Capture these genuine connections — perhaps the groomsmen helping seat guests or the flower girl playing around. These shots will complement the formal photos later in the ceremony and create a full, well-rounded story of the day.
Check on the Bride: If the bride and bridal party are nearby, take a moment to check on them. You can photograph the behind-the-scenes excitement, whether it’s a nervous bride looking at herself in the mirror or a flower girl practicing her walk. These candid moments provide a deeper insight into the couple’s emotions before the ceremony starts.
The processional is one of the most important parts of the ceremony, so positioning yourself correctly is key. This is where you’ll capture some of the first emotional moments of the day, so it’s important to be in the right spot at the right time:
Stand at the Front: Position yourself on the bride’s side of the aisle. This allows you to get a full view of the entire processional and ensures you’re ready to capture each person walking down the aisle, from the bridesmaids to the flower girl to the groom’s emotional expression as the bride enters.
Capture Each Walk: As the groomsmen, bridesmaids, and other key figures walk down the aisle, stay focused and ready to snap photos of their expressions and interactions. These are moments that the couple will love to look back on — the smiles, the nerves, and the anticipation.
Don’t Stress About Standing Out: You may feel self-conscious standing at the front with all eyes on you, but once the processional starts, all attention will be on the bridal party. Focus on the shots and let the moment unfold. Stay calm and confident.
The bride’s entrance is one of the most cherished moments in wedding ceremony photography. It’s a moment of magic, and you’ll want to capture it from multiple angles:
Crouch Down for Better Angles: Position yourself low so that guests behind you can still see the action. This allows you to capture the bride’s walk as well as the groom’s reaction simultaneously. These candid moments will be some of the most cherished in the final gallery.
Focus on the Connection: This is a moment filled with emotion. Shift between capturing the bride’s approach and the groom’s reaction. His expression as he sees her for the first time will be something they both will treasure forever.
Once the ceremony begins, your role is to move discreetly and capture the key moments without disrupting the flow of the ceremony. This includes the vows, the ring exchange, and of course, the first kiss:
Start Wide: Begin with a wide shot of the ceremony space. Capture the couple, guests, the altar, and the overall setting. This will help set the stage and establish the scene before narrowing in on the key moments.
Move Strategically: Work your way from the sides, avoiding crossing the middle unless necessary. Get shots of the couple exchanging vows, close-ups of their hands during the ring exchange, and reactions from the wedding party. Try not to stand directly in the aisle for these moments, unless it’s absolutely necessary to get the perfect shot.
Be in the Aisle for the First Kiss: For this iconic moment, it’s essential to capture it clearly. Stand in the center of the aisle, where you’ll have a perfect angle of the kiss. This is a once-in-a-lifetime shot, so don’t miss it!
The recessional is another exciting and joyful part of the ceremony, so be ready to capture the couple’s exit:
Walk Backwards: As the couple walks toward you, step backward while continuing to snap photos. You can suggest a fun moment like a dip or a kiss to add romance to their exit shots.
Capture Candid Moments: Once the couple exits the ceremony space, follow them and take candid photos of hugs, laughter, and emotional celebrations with family and friends. These moments are often just as important as the ceremony itself, and they will capture the joy and excitement of the newlyweds.
If you’re shooting the ceremony solo, it can feel overwhelming. Here are a few tips to help you navigate the day smoothly:
Coordinate Ahead: Before the ceremony begins, discuss timing and key moments with the couple and coordinator. Understanding what the couple envisions for the day will ensure you’re both on the same page.
Stay Calm: Remember, most guests aren’t paying attention to you. Focus on capturing the story without worrying about being noticed.
Adapt as Needed: Every wedding ceremony is different. Stay flexible and adjust as needed to capture those unexpected but meaningful moments. It’s part of the magic of wedding ceremony photography.
Wedding ceremony photography is about MORE THAN just getting the perfect shot; it’s about telling the story of the day through candid moments, emotional reactions, and unforgettable memories. By knowing where to position yourself and when to capture each key moment, you’ll ensure you don’t miss anything important. Whether you’re working solo or with a second shooter, these tips will help you feel prepared and confident to document the magic of the ceremony. Keep practicing, stay flexible, and most importantly, enjoy the process—these are moments your clients will cherish forever.
