If you’re looking for a scenic, family-friendly hike in St. John’s, Newfoundland, the Signal Hill Historic Trail is a must-do. With incredible ocean views, historic landmarks, and a rewarding stop at Quidi Vidi Brewery, this 3.7 km adventure was one of our favourite highlights on our East Coast trip — and we did it with two kids in tow!
We began our Signal Hill hike at Old Battery Road, just a short walk from our nearby bed and breakfast. The roads leading to the trailhead were a bit narrow, and we had to walk alongside them briefly before reaching the end of the road — where the official trail begins. From the very start, we were greeted with breathtaking coastal views and fresh ocean air.
The Signal Hill trail is a mix of rocky and narrow terrain, especially in areas close to the cliff’s edge. While not too technical, we held our children’s hands during these sections, especially with strong wind gusts coming and going.
Despite the rugged path, it was easy to follow and well-trafficked. We passed friendly locals and tourists along the way — a reassuring sign for anyone hiking this trail for the first time.
We hiked on a sunny Monday at the end of July and started around 10:30 a.m., which gave us plenty of daylight and fewer crowds.
Throughout the trail, there were several benches and rest areas where we could stop for water breaks and take in the sweeping views of St. John’s, the coastline, and rolling hills. The photo ops here are endless — don’t forget your camera or binoculars (we even did a quick whale-watching break!).
One important note: the peak near the top of the trail is extremely windy! Thanks to a kind local who gave us a heads-up, we held onto our hats and sunglasses before reaching the summit.
About halfway through the hike, we hit the steepest incline: a long wooden staircase leading up to the historic Cabot Tower. While it looked daunting, even our kids (ages 6 and 9) climbed it like champs — with a short break halfway up.
At the top, we explored the Cabot Tower gift shop, checked out the views from inside, and caught our breath before continuing.
After the tower, we continued along the coastline toward Quidi Vidi, stopping at lookout points for water breaks and a few more photos. While we didn’t spot any whales, we’ve heard others have luck along this section!
This stretch of the trail felt quieter and more peaceful. Once we reached the end, we followed a short 800-meter road walk into the village.
The Quidi Vidi Brewery was the perfect post-hike destination. With beautiful harbor views, great food, and refreshing flights of local craft beer, it was the reward we didn’t know we needed. (Read about our full experience at Quidi Vidi Brewery here.)
We also enjoyed the walk back to our B&B — about 2.5 km (30 minutes) of sidewalk strolling with minimal elevation, plus a few fun surprises along the way (including roadside cats and local construction action the kids loved watching).
If you’re visiting Newfoundland with your family, the Signal Hill Historic Trail from Battery Road to Quidi Vidi Brewery is a must-do. With stunning scenery, historic stops, and a fun brewery visit at the end, it’s a well-balanced adventure that works for families with kids who are used to walking and exploring.
We’d definitely hike it again — especially with the same sunny skies, cool breeze, and beautiful payoff at the end!
